Performing a start-up for your sprinkler system helps your lawn and plants stay hydrated throughout the spring season!
Now that the cold weather has passed, it's time to start going through your spring outdoor checklist! One bullet point that should be at the very top of the list is performing an irrigation system start-up.
Winterizing your sprinkler system prior to winter helped protect it from freezing by ensuring no water was left in the pipes. With spring on the horizon, your lawn and plants will need ample watering so they will remain hydrated and survive the summer months.
You should always have a professional irrigation technician perform your system start-up.
You might be saying to yourself, "well turning my sprinkler system on sounds easy enough. Why can't I do it myself?"
Though the process doesn't seem to take much effort, an irrigation start-up can indeed be done incorrectly. Multiple steps are involved in turning your sprinkler system back on and one misstep could lead to high water bills and damage to your landscape if you miss something important.
Our technicians are trained professionals who have performed irrigation start-ups for hundreds of systems over the course of their careers. They know how to:
- Safely pressurize the system without bursting the pipes
- Look for and repair the kind of damage sprinkler systems are susceptible to
- Make necessary adjustments to the sprinkler heads to ensure all zones are getting equal water distribution

Our irrigation and sprinkler system start-up process is extremely thorough. We go to great lengths to ensure your system is functioning properly so your lawn and landscape plants always get adequate watering.
Below is an outline of our complete irrigation start-up process performed by technicians:
- Step 1
Our technicians will go onto your property to turn on the water supply connected to the irrigation system so the system can gradually begin filling with water.
- Step 2
The sprinkler system program controller is reset and activated.
- Step 3
As the mainline pressurizes, we check for leaks or any other signs of damage that occurred over the winter.
- Step 4
Each zone is electronically activated to ensure valve operation and visually inspected for leaks, spray coverage, and any other potential damage. Heads are adjusted for coverage.
- Step 5
Tune the irrigation controller based on observations of the irrigation system operating.
- Step 6
If your irrigation system has a rain sensor, this will also be checked and adjusted.
- Step 7
Following the start-up process, the technician will complete any necessary repairs (time and materials charged in addition) and will review the start-up and repairs with the homeowner.
Airdrie, Okotoks, & Cochrane have restrictive watering windows that require residents to water their lawns during certain hours and days of the week. We can preset and adjust the watering schedule according to your designated city so your property is in compliance!
